New Advanced AI Technique Rapidly Optimizes 3D Printing for Any Application
Researchers at Washington State University (WSU) developed a new AI technique to quickly optimize 3D printing parameters for any application. It saves time and money, which could result in cheaper products and more efficient material use. The team experimented by 3D printing complex lifelike models of human organs. Usually when printing such complex models, several variables need to be adjusted and tested to find the most optimal solution. Variables such as the best material, printer configurations, nozzle pressure, and more must to be considered during this process. The process is costly, time consuming, and requires a lot of effort. So, to make the process more efficient WSU researchers trained an AI to optimize the 3D printing process of organ models used in surgeon training and implant evaluation. The AI method looked to analyze and optimize crucial metrics such as a model’s geometric precision, its density, and printing time. By striking the perfect balance between these characteristics the team was able to 3D print organs that accurately resembled real human organs down to the veins and arteries. With only minor alterations this same method could be used in automotive engineering, aviation, and other fields. The method has the potential to significantly boost the efficiency of manufacturing and design, which could lead to more efficient material use, better lead times, and cheaper products.
